I recently read an article that detailed every man’s 15 must haves according to fashion designer Tom Ford. The list was interesting. Tom’s list included a variety of things. A sense of humor, tweezers, a signature cologne and dark denim jeans are a few of the ‘must haves’ that made his list. Reading the article, challenged me to create a list of my own. What do I consider a must have? What things could I do without?
To answer those questions and determine what my list would look like, I started with the basics. Here goes….
When you get right down to it, every man has his own list of favorite things, or preferred items. But not every man understands what a must have really is. For the longest time, I didn't. I had no idea what size sports coats, pants or dress shirts I was supposed to wear. My most influential years were filled with Boys 2 Men baggy denim jeans, large denim shirts to match and a funky tie. I didn’t like wearing pants in my actual size because, well, truth be told; I looked like a cowboy wearing tight pants. Eventually, I realized pants weren’t meant to be ‘baggy’. I came to understand that everything should be tailored (or as close as you can get) to fit. Yes, even T-Shirts!
Don’t forget the fabric. As important as it is to make sure your clothes fit properly, there’s much more to understand. Clothes come in many different fabrics and sometimes it's tough to figure out what’s a good fit for you as an individual. It's all about quality and making sure you buy the fabric that compliments you. I highly recommend buying clothes that are 100% fabrics.
Style…You have to have a sense of style. If you don't have one, GOOGLE one! The overall goal of a man who wants to be stylish is to improve his wardrobe. Yes, it can be pricey. However, I am a man who refuses to and rarely does pay full price for anything. Always look for sales in nice brand stores. And, with the internet at your fingertips, sale items that can improve your wardrobe are no more than a click away….
Shoes and Socks please… I cannot express enough the importance of having nice shoes. Get rid of your high school preconceived notions about shoes. If you want to be in the big leagues, think Cole Haan, Aston Grey, etc. There is nothing wrong with having Timberlands, but you don't want to be remembered for always wearing Tim's.
Funky socks speak to a man's confidence. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read this article Enough said.
Ties are very cosmopolitan! Every man about town or about style should have a tie collection. Depending on your size will depend on if you should buy a skinny, medium or regular tie. Your collection should include the standard solids: black, blue and gray. It’s also good to have a few knitted ties for variety. Make sure if you have patterned ties that you wear them with the proper patterned clothing.
Haircuts are paramount. Make sure you have a nice haircut! A bad haircut or style can be an absolute deal breaker when it comes to being stylish. For the brothers’ make sure you keep a clean cut with a tight edge up. For my white brothers’, no more Justin Bieber. Short hair is in, so keep things tidy. Think Mad Men.
Laundry. Guys if you're not doing your laundry, shame on you. Learn how to wash your clothes. Learn how to IRON! Your clothes should always look crisp, sharp and clean. Always bring your dress shirts and your favors to the cleaners. If you can't afford to bring them to the cleaners, you can always wash them at home and bring them to the cleaners to be pressed. As I said before, I’m all about paying less. You can maintain a crisp clean wardrobe and not break the bank doing it!
